Good to see someone with a good range of fasteners for us wooden boaties in practical quantity amounts. I no longer need to by 200 nails because they come in a weight only amount. I wanted 50 nails, these guys sold me 50 . A better way to buy i think.
Well done guys. I will buy again

Blueseas40ish

Jun-19 8:30am

I was a little shocked by the attitude of a different marine fastener supplier to these guys when getting a quote on some screws.
Im sorry i even tried elswhere .
Im sticking with these guys, as always they are helpful and friendly with any enquiry ive had and whatever ive bought has been sent to me quickly. Unlike another boat shop that ive dealt with that seem to do it whenever they feel like it.
So if your looking for some wood boat supplies, give these guys a go.
Im certainly a happy customer here !.

The Myth of Country of Origin
The Myth of " Country of Origin " and Silicon Bronze and Copper Fasteners

I am often asked a question of "what is the country of origin of your fasteners" in regard to our range of Silicon Bronze and Copper Fasteners .
This question used to be of relavance some 50 years ago, but in todays modern world its really bocome a defunct phrase and also highly questionable .
The very reason people tend to ask this question in the first place is purely based on the promting of another misguided source or individual, or a misunderstanding of what the differences really are.

The REAL QUESTION that should be being asked is Not "what is the country of origin ", but rather "to what standard are they produced" .
Why?.. Because a standard is exactly that , a defined and verified set of rules that apply to materials, manufacture methods and overall finish and quality.
Whereas "country of origin " can be either where the wholesalers office is located , or they made some but not necessarilly all their product range there. It DOES NOT mean the fastener was actually made there , or how well or to any , IF ANY type of defined standards.
You will notice that some fastener retailers often use the phrase - "we source from USA and NZ " .
But lets look at this a little closer - the term "sourced /source from" , is highly confused with and used to cleverly lead you to thinking it means "made in" . The truth "sourced from" DOES NOT mean "made in " . All it may mean is we bought it off a wholsale supplier who had an office in that particular country .
Some home truths are the real fact that in the new world , some of these USA and NZ "sources", or sellers hiding behind the entrenched myth of "country of origin ", have in the past, and most likely still are this very day, substituting non standardised fasteners produced by unknown factories in other parts of the world to make a bigger profit from. Even the the fasteners they may actually produce often carry no certification of any standard of any kind .
So whether we like it or not , we need to drag ourselves up and away from the past myths and urban legends of "country of origin" and in to the 21st century of globalized factories and production where the most importand factor is goods produced to a defined set of standards which means you know exactly what you are getting.

As some examples , i cant ever recall anyone ever raising the country of origin issue over a Cummins or Caterpiller Diesel engine , but in truth many of the components , if not some of the whole engines can be made in Chinese factories . There is absulutely nothing wrong with these engines and they are some of the best you can get...why?, because the components are made to a SET STANDARD, materials are to set standard, methods are to a set standard and machinery and handling are to a set standard !!.

Ultimately as the consumer , choices are entirely yours. However we need to drag ourselves out of the dark ages and away from entrenched mythology existent in the Armchair Admirals of the world and free ourselves from getting caught up in " country of origin mentality " and in to the real world where "Standards"matter most .

Perhaps next time when getting a quote or looking for fasteners for your boat , if one retailer suggests you should check the "country of origin " of other suppliers, dont just go off questioning everybody else at their egging on , ALSO ask them if they can 100% verify the EXACT place of manufacter ( not source or suppliers offices) , but the exact place of manufactere...AND the EXACT DEFINED STANDARDS they have been produced to . You might get one huge shock on the reply , and if they skip the isse of real defined standards...well obviously skip the fasteners as well !!. All to often they hide behind "country of origin " and to steer you off the truth immediately tell you question everyone else in a hope you dont ever question them on the same issue.
In fact they are often getting their fasteners from several different suppliers at the same time , what sort of standards control does or any control over the true quality does that give ?, Answer = 0 ( none, nil, zip ) .

For those that may well ask , our Silicon Bronze is all to standard C65100-HO4 ( unless we state otherwise..ie. if its not we will honestly tell you ) , and Our Copper is C1100 .
Both Copper and Silicon Bronze are produced by the same and only producer . We know exactly where every screw, nail, nut and bolt and washer came from and the standard it is produced to.

Happy boating and stay happy and healthy people !!.

Silicon Bronze quality

It has come to our attention through some boating forums there are some Silicon Bronze screws out there in the market that the heads just snap off all the time when driving.

Please be assured these are NOT screws from us, or our supplier and we wish to make this and the following very clear. We have full knowledge from point of manufacture and the standard of manufacture right through to delivery to you.

Theres no confusion in their origin, and we dont use the play on words "sourced from USA "etc . The words "sourced from" does in no way mean "made in".

This is a little misleading to consumers , as the retailer may use the term for eg "sourced from USA" to create the impression to you it is a USA product , but then they have no idea of where the USA supplier may have got them from, that is they can not in any way garuntee its actual origin .

Dont be tricked by this , and be fully aware there is some mass dumping of Silicon Bronze screws in NSW and spreading and this we beleive is where the suspect faulty screws are coming from . These appear to be being sold out through big retailers such as Boltmasters and the like and these arent in any way specialty marine retailers and certainly not qualified . You will be given advice on marine fasteners by a pimply faced 17 yr old fresh from school.

At the end of the day , the choice is yours, but be aware of exactly what you are getting .

Do you want " Bunnings" or "Masters" grade fasteners, or do you want properly manufactured fasteners , BACKED by over 30 yrs knowledge ?

GFO imitators

GFO® gland packing imitators

We have been noticing some substitute GFO style packing hitting the market , and we have also had this offered to us to buy and resell.

We have not even considered selling it - because IT IS NOT TRUE GFO in most cases.

How do we know this?- its simple, manufacturers have approached us offering us this substitute and have given us actual sample pieces of their GFO copies and we can tell you its nothing like genuine Palmetto GFO . So we did not take up their offers to sell it here in Australia .

Since then we are now seeing some national Australian companies selling it to the Australian market and we say shame on them for putting profits ahead of providing you with the true and genuine article. Especially when it is being sold under disguise of being genuine GFO

The sellers of this generic type are getting around the trademarked name of GFO® , by making the statement " GFO Style" . It creates the impression you are getting GFO packing, when in reality , in most cases all you are getting is a common PTFE packing with some graphite added to make it look like GFO.

It is being sold cheaper , and thats simply because it is a cheaper copy

Another way of getting around the proper GFO name , is to add the suffix C, for example cGFO or CGFO . The C usually refers to China as its origin, and this is a way of getting around the approved GFO name and creating the impression it is the real and true GFO

We arent knocking China, in fact they produce a lot of world class goods , but just remember, some of their companies also produce a lot of unauthorized or unapproved copies and generics of an original quality product .

The simplest way to tell if it is real GFO® is that it has "100% GFO" printed on the packing itself , or the packaging states the same.

The name GFO and the packing itself is trademarked , as well as the "Super tephite" material construction of genuine GFO itself, which means only approved manufacturers may display and use it. So if it does not bear the genuine trademarks or labelling- then its simply NOT GENUINE GFO .

Saving yourself $10.00 on your gland packing may cost you $4000.00 or more for a new shaft . Consider this, and when specifying GFO, be sure you are getting GFO® .

GFO Fibre gland packing

GFO Fibre gland packing - We have been getting some good feedback on GFO style packing to overcome problem leaking glands. The latest is from a gentleman whom we supplied some GFO packing to as a remedy for a vintage car waterpump which was consistantly chewing up the flax type packing and leaking. The report so far is the GFO isnt leaking and working well. We will hopefully get some more feedback over time to see it keeps performing in this situation.

Most forums from around the world all speak highly of the GFO fibre as a stern gland packing and its better performance over the traditional flax and PTFE types.
